Customized Training

The Center for Workforce Development customizes training to respond to the specific needs of existing businesses and industries. We work closely with our clients to develop a training package that will address needed areas of training for their employees. Clients can select from a host of training topics that can be customized to their specific organization, or we can develop a new curriculum from identified areas of need.

Retirement Planning

The Center for Workforce Development in partnership with the Virginia Retirement System, offers training on retirement planning. These popular Pre-Retirement Education Program (PREP) sessions are held at community college campuses across the state. Visit the VRS website for a PREP schedule and Registration Form. These eight-hour sessions cover the following basic topics:

Start a new career in just weeks!  Income tax preparation may be just what you’re looking for.  A career as a tax professional is possible after completing the Comprehensive Income Tax Course offered online through the Income Tax School.

Comprehensive Individual Income Tax Course
For beginners wanting to learn taxes – no prerequisites required!

Advanced Individual Income Tax Course
For more in depth individual tax knowledge; must have some prior tax knowledge

Small Business Income Tax Course
For business tax returns; must have some prior tax knowledge

KeyTrain Instruction:

Individuals interested in improving basic workplace skills or their test performance for WorkKeys Testing or the VA Career Readiness Certificate can do so by utilizing KeyTrain.  KeyTrain is beneficial for students or employees who seem unprepared for the challenges of the workplace; perform below the goals of WorkKeys or similar assessments; or are not qualified for the jobs they want or need.  Each KeyTrain course includes lessons organized by WorkKeys levels and skills.  These lessons include review tutorials, skill demonstrations, and interactive work-related exercises.  KeyTrain is being used to increase the workplace skills of individuals in many different educational setting, such as:  School-to-Work/Vocational Education; Workforce Development; Business Employee Development; and Paraprofessionals/Teaching Assistants.  For more information regarding KeyTrain, contact MECC’s Workforce Development Office at (276) 523-7477 or email mmwilliams@me.vccs.edu.

WorkKeys Testing:

WorkKeys is a comprehensive employability skills assessment tool from ACT designed to help individuals develop better workplace skills.  WorkKeys offers eight assessments that can be used singly or in combination to measure workplace skills.  WorkKeys tests are scored on a set of established skill scales to ensure an accurate, systematic way to assess an individual’s abilities and compare them to job requirements.  The tests measure skills from entry-level to the point where specialized training is needed to perform a job successfully.  Assessments include:  Applied Mathematics; Applied Technology; Listening; Locating Information; Observation; Reading for Information; Teamwork; and Writing.  For more information on WorkKeys Testing, contact MECC’s Workforce Development Office at (276) 523-7477 or email mmwilliams@me.vccs.edu.
