Service Learning

To be an effective and meaningful learning method, the following essential elements should be incorporated into the service-learning experience:

GOAL SETTING
Students, in partnership with their placement site supervisor, establish goals and specific objectives in relation to their placement site service and their classroom requirements.

RECIPROCITY
Service and learning are beneficial for BOTH students and the community. There is reciprocity between the server and those served.

REFLECTION
Students are required to engage in reflection activities, through written journal writings and oral presentation about their experiences.

DOCUMENTATION
Students are required to document service hours. Faculty will document activities conducted and contacts made.

EVALUATION
Service-learning experiences are evaluated by students and the community agency to provide valuable feedback to improve and strengthen service-learning opportunities.

MEANINGFUL SERVICE
Service provided will meet actual community needs and will be challenging to students in order to increase their community awareness and enhance their critical thinking and learning.
