Air Conditioning and Refrigeration

Heating, Ventilation, Air
Conditioning and Refrigeration technicians build, test, install, maintain, and repair heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and equipment in commercial,
residential, and institutional settings. They also install and maintain cooling and/or heating systems in modes of transportation such as cars, trucks, planes, and trains.
Employers want HVAC & R technicians who:
- Are trained in the HVAC & R field.
- Have excellent communication and people skills.
- Enjoy building and repairing things.
- Have manual dexterity and are detail oriented.
Employment Outlook:
- Currently, between 65,000-85,000 technical professionals are employed in the HVAC & R-related industries.
- Projections show a 19 percent increase in demand
for HVAC & R technical professionals through the year 2014.
Certification
HVAC & R technicians must pass an EPA-approved certification test if they will be purchasing or handling refrigerants
such as CFCs. MECC provides HVAC Excellence Certified Technician and EPA Certification testing.
Advancement
HVAC & R technicians can advance to the following positions:
- Inspectors - ensure that equipment or systems are manufactured or installed according to specification and code, and adhere to company and agency standards.
- Service managers - supervise workers in the field, publish service information,
and provide technical training to employees and customers.
- Project managers - oversee a specific project, including engineering design, materials control, on-site problem solving, and coordination with other companies at the job site.
Salary
Average annual income:
$25,500 - $41,500.
