MECC hosts Disability Awareness Week
In recognition of October being Disability Awareness Month, Mountain Empire Community College will host a Disability Awareness Week on the college campus during the week of October 12-15th.
"All of us will face disability issues whether personally or with a family member, co-worker or acquaintance. It is important for each of us to gain knowledge of disability issues and disability etiquette," says organizer Whitney Estep, an MECC graduate and current Lindsey Wilson College student. She encourages everyone to participate in as many of the events as possible to make a difference in your life and the lives of others.
The schedule for the week is as follows:
Monday through Thursday, October 12 -15th there will be informational tables displaying disability awareness information in each building.
Tuesday, October 13th, 12:15-1:15 pm in the Career Center in Holton Hall, the Junction Center for Independent Living will be lending out assistive devices to simulate different handicaps. Students will be given the opportunity to check out the device and use them in their classes.
Wednesday, October 14th there will be a "Change Your World Day" seminar held from 9 a.m.-1.00 p.m., presented by the Junction Center for Independent Living in the Goodloe Center. This seminar will focus on building community supports and how to access them. This event is free and open to anyone interested.
