Bird in the House on exhibit at Slemp Gallery
The Bird in the House series is the new exhibit by artist Deborah Bryan showing from September 14th to October 30th at the Slemp Gallery on the Mountain Empire Community College campus.
The Bird in the House series consists of twenty-five intaglio prints completed between 1999 and 2006. They are interiors, peopled with birds.
Bryan states, “I prefer to use birds and interiors that are familiar. Most of the earlier prints in this series deal with issues of belonging, or not belonging, while the later prints tend to focus satirically on either human foibles or current political issues.
Bryan, who has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Kent State, enrolled in drawing, painting, and printmaking classes while in practice in Connecticut. After moving to Johnson City, she changed careers and completed a Master of Fine Arts degree from East Tennessee State University.
She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Visual Arts at Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tennessee. Her honors include the Karl Schrag Award in 2008, and the Krishna Reddy Award in 2006, both from the Society of American Graphic Artists in New York.
