The Larkins to Perform at MECC Foundation Fundraising Event
The Mountain Empire Community College Foundation will host a special event featuring musical guests, The Larkins, on Thursday, September 20. The event will be held at the Scott County Career and Technical Center at 6:30 p.m. to raise funds for an endowed Ambassador Scholarship to assist Scott County students attending MECC.
Ambassador Scholarships are service-learning scholarships created by MECC to provide grant assistance to help students meet the direct costs of attending college, as well as compensation for the students’ service in the community. Currently, Ambassador Scholars are serving as reading tutors in local elementary schools for children in grades K-3. Proceeds from the upcoming event should put the account over the $25,000 amount needed to endow the scholarship.
At the September 20 fundraiser, enjoy a delicious buffet dinner from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., prepared by students in the Culinary Arts program at the Scott County Career and Technical Center. Coffee and delicious desserts will be available throughout the evening as guests enjoy the bluegrass music of Shaunna and Tina Larkins.
The Larkins sisters are third generation musical artisans, reared in a family steeped in the finest traditions of mountain music. They have shared stages with some of the biggest names in country music over the last several years, and debuted on the stage of the "Grand Ole Opry" on July 7, 2001, coming back for encore performances when their schedule allowed. The Larkins’ single, "Steady As The Rain," was written by Dolly Parton, who also sings harmony vocals and appears in their music video.
For event tickets, which are $30 per person, call Jeri Bledsoe in the MECC Foundation office at (276)523-2400, extension 287. Twenty dollars of the purchase price is tax-deductible.
Gifts to the Ambassador Scholarship for Scott County students are fully tax-deductible. Anyone wishing to contribute to the scholarship should make the check payable to MECC Foundation and earmark it Scott County Ambassador Scholarship. Mail the check to MECC Foundation, 3441 Mountain Empire Road, Big Stone Gap, Virginia 24219.
