Glenmary Knights of Columbus Establish $15,000 Scholarship at MECC
Permanent residents of Wise, Lee, Russell, Scott and Dickenson Counties, and the City of Norton have the opportunity to receive a new Mountain Empire Community College Foundation scholarship, which was recently created by the Knights of Columbus Glenmary Council No. 7853. The scholarship will be awarded full-time students in good academic standing, and the recipients will be selected by the MECC Financial Aid Office. The scholarship funds can be used to pay tuition, books, supplies, as well as other educational expenses.
In providing the scholarship, the Council’s Grand Knight Doug Chute remarked, “MECC provides a wide variety of educational and training programs to prepare students for a job, or to transfer to a four year college. The Knights of Columbus is proud to help local students take advantage of these opportunities.”
When the gift was made, Knights of Columbus member Bob Isaac explained that the Council had been saving the money to construct a facility, but decided the funds could be better used to fund scholarships for area students. “Our Knights of Columbus members know how hard it is for students to meet their college expenses. We are glad to help and encourage them,” said Isaac.
The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic men’s fraternal organization that is organized to provide support to its members and their families. The new endowed scholarship expresses the organization’s broader commitment to its community.
