Hicks and Rhoton Receive MECC Emeriti Awards

At Mountain Empire Community College’s recent Celebration of People event, former employees Leah Hicks and Martha Rhoton received Emeriti awards and titles.  The term “Emeritus” is an adjective used in the title of a retired professor or other professional.  Hicks received the 2007 Professor Emeritus award, while Rhoton received the 2007 Support Staff Emeritus award.

Hicks worked at MECC for over 21 years, beginning with her employment in March 1981 until her retirement in December 2002.  According to the Professor Emeritus Committee who nominated her for the award, she has always been actively involved in college activities, and has been described as an exemplary instructor and avid student advocate. 

Her dedication to the strategic planning for the Administrative Support Technology Program has been an integral part of its progress and success.  Even after her retirement, Hicks continues to be involved with MECC in writing the college’s history. 

Rhoton, a Scott County native, served the college in the position of Library Specialist from July 1, 1982 to April 26, 2005.  She was an active member of the Association of Classified Employees, and from 1991 until 1997 served on the MECC Foundation Board as the Classified Staff Representative.  In addition, Rhoton established an MECC scholarship, which she endowed to honor her parents, Nell B. and E. J. Rhoton. 

“To say that Martha is a one-of-a-kind would be an understatement,” says former co-worker and longtime friend Neka Wilson.  “Anyone who knows her knows what a gem she is.  She loves the adventure of life, and enjoys every minute possible.  She is one of the most enthusiastic supporters of Mountain Empire Community College and the educational opportunities it offers.  I am proud to call her my best friend.”
