MECC Training Program Gives Students Local Career Options

The “fast-track” training program at Mountain Empire Community College will enable students to work as computer programmers for software development companies after completion. Even more appealing is that this training program will make it possible for students to stay in the area and work locally if they choose.

There are a number of potential career options for students who complete MECC’s new Software Development Fast-Track. CGI-AMS, located in Lebanon, Virginia, has guaranteed an interview for all students who complete the training program. Although there is no guaranteed interview with Northrop Grumman, also located in Lebanon, the company will be in need of at least 50 software developers, giving individuals who complete the program yet another chance to possibly obtain a job in the field.

The Software Development Fast-Track is geared toward individuals who demonstrate an interest in technology and business, have strong problem-solving abilities, excellent organizational skills, and meet the requirements for admission into the training program. All courses will be offered online and can be completed in just nine months, although training will be rigorous.

Requirements for admission include previous completion of a degree, either two-year or four-year in any discipline, or related work experience and excellent computer skills. Full scholarships are available for qualified individuals.
Individuals interested in Software Development Fast-Track should attend an information session at MECC on Tuesday, April 24. The session will begin at 6 p.m., and will be held in the Goodloe Center of Phillips-Taylor Hall. Courses for the program will begin on May 16 and end on December 19.
