PTK Inducts New Members at MECC

Recently, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) at Mountain Empire Community College grew a bit larger with the induction of new members at a special ceremony held in Fugate Auditorium on campus. PTK was established in 1918 as a national honor society for two-year colleges, and is part of the Alpha Delta Psi chapter at MECC. The hallmarks of the society are service, leadership, and scholarship.

At the induction ceremony, guest speaker Robert England addressed terrorism in today’s society. England, who is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at MECC, spoke about the goal of terrorism, which is to force change. He discussed the different acts of terrorism including bombings, arsons, assassinations, hijackings, kidnappings, and even minor acts such as certain types of graffiti. England stressed that it is not how people look that is important, but what they do that really matters when determining what may be suspicious in terms of terrorism.

After England’s presentation, inductees repeated an oath of membership and signed the PTK membership book. New members who attended the special ceremony were Thomas Boyd Baty, Christina LeeAnn Blanken, Leanna G. Darnell, Sheila Ann Hamblin, Randall Edward Lawson, Victoria Shea Shuler, Shannon Turue Stacey, Melissa Ann Stanley, Michelle Lee Sullivan, and Cheryl Ann Wolford.

Other new PTK members include Jenny Lynn Carter, Amber Lanae Colley, Stacey Denise Dingus, Sherrie Lynn Herron, Remona S. Jackson, Joseph Steven Lane, Ola Marie Mellons, Brittany Kara Rose, Courtney Lynn Stidham, and Nasrin Yazdanpanah.

These members met all requirements of PTK which include enrolling in an associate degree program, completing at least 12 semester hours of college-level work with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher, and enjoying full rights of citizenship.

New members were inducted into PTK, the international honor society for two-year colleges, at MECC on March 29. (Front Row, Left to Right) Randall Edward Lawson, Sheila Ann Hamblin, Leanna G. Darnell, Christina LeeAnn Blanken, and Thomas Boyd Baty
