Annual High School Art Exhibition at MECC’s Slemp Gallery
The artistic talents of students from nine area high schools are currently on display at Mountain Empire Community College. Through March 30, visitors to the Slemp Gallery at MECC can view the 2007 Annual High School Art Exhibition. The show includes a number of pen and pencil drawings, oil and watercolor paintings, and pieces such as a paper mache mask, a mosaic using paper materials, and sculptures made from wire. Subjects range from Jesus to Batman, and from everyday items and things found in nature to abstract creations originating from the students’ imaginations.
Under the instruction of art teacher Courtney Barnett, Morgan Ireson, Miranda Peters, and David Their contributed pieces from Appalachia High School. From Gate City, students Emily Cook, Becky Kindle, Jocelyn Newton, Joseph Rimer, and Jared Vineyard are featuring work at MECC. Their teacher is David Jones.
J.I. Burton teacher Neil Walker’s students, Kayla Barnette, Stephanie Brock, Brittney Childress, Johnny Deel, Ashley Hunter, Audrey Mullins, Dan Roberson, and Sheena Tate are contributors to the show. From J.J. Kelly, contributors are Chris Darnell, Nathan Lawson, Magan Meade Charlie Reeves, and Kathryn Swanson. Their teachers are Michael Morris and Kathy Hibbitts.
Lee High students Laura Bell, Tanner Bryington, Julie Day, Heather Huff, Katie Skaggs, and Zac Tucker’s work is featured. Lee art teachers are Barbara Davidson and Lila Porterfield. Powell Valley teacher Michael Morris instructs Cody Collins, Joseph Cooperstein, Callie Cress, Tyler Garrett, Jase Miller, Amanda Murphy and Parker Pitman, who are each participating in the exhibit at MECC.
Rye Cove students contributing to the show are Shenna Adams, Brittney Kinkead, Donovan Lane, and Blake Lawson. Their teacher is Hannah Kerns. St. Paul participants are Bonnie Carrico, Bonnie Carrier, Erica Dingus, and Jasen Hager under teacher Katie Jessie. Twin Springs’ student contributors are Keshia Boggs, Jarrod Brandon, Amber Gilley, Matt Owens, Samantha Salyer, Tiffany Sexton, and Caitlyn Strouth. Mary Beth Culbertson is their teacher.
The Slemp Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. It is located in the Wampler Library of Robb Hall.

Powell Valley student Callie Cress’s piece is just one of the original works currently featured in the 2007 Annual High School Art Exhibition. The show will be on display until March 30 in the Slemp Gallery on the campus of MECC. Students from nine area high schools are participating.
