PTK Inducts New Members at MECC

Recently, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) at Mountain Empire Community College grew a bit larger with the induction of new members at a special ceremony held in Fugate Auditorium on campus.  PTK was established in 1918 as a national honor society for two-year colleges, and is part of the Alpha Delta Psi chapter at MECC.  The hallmarks of the society are service, leadership, and scholarship.

At the induction ceremony, PTK advisor and guest speaker Kyle Scanlan addressed the honors study topic Gold, Gods, and Glory:  The Global Dynamics of Power.  Scanlan, who holds four bachelors’ degrees from King College and a master’s degree from East Tennessee State University, has taught history at MECC for three years.  The PTK honors topic brings important, current issues to the fore and encourages Phi Theta Kappans to examine how these issues affect their lives.

Inductees repeated an oath of membership and signed the PTK membership book at the ceremony.  New members who attended were Darah Jean Arwood, Whitney Nicole Bolling, Stephanie Nicole Cobb, Whitney LeAnn Estep, Joy Michelle Hensley, Rebecca Dawn Kelly, Archie Reed Mullins, Tabitha Annette Sperow, Adam Tabor, and Michelle Nichole Thompson.

Other new PTK members include Walter J. Barlow, Rachel Beth Burke, Rebekah Brittany Davis, Christopher Clay Gilbert, Samantha Renea Gilliam, John Henry Goins, Regina Kay Hilton, Cathy R. Marcum, Anna Michael, Tammy Faye Mullins, Isaac Lane Newsome, Sharon Kay Odle, Patricia Linnea Peacock, Brenda J. Pearcy, Shauna L. Petrunak, Sabrina Dawn Poff, Sheila Marie Robinette, Mark Jason Smith, Ann Marie Sturgill, Nelson David Vance, and Arthur Gerald White.

These members met all requirements of PTK which include enrolling in an associate degree program, completing at least 12 semester hours of college-level work with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher, and enjoying full rights of citizenship.
