MECC Presents Drawing Exhibition by Chicago
Artist, Teresa J. Parker
The Slemp Gallery at Mountain Empire Community
College is currently showing recent drawings by Chicago artist and
curator Teresa J. Parker. The exhibit is comprised of more than
a dozen new graphite drawings and prints dealing with the subject
of Madonnas and Matriarchs. Parker examines the theme of women in
society and their impact upon family, faith, and culture.
Her surreal drawings are often composed with
iconic figures. She presents topics and issues such as health, family,
faith, and the mistreatment of women. She describes her work as
a global examination of the dignity, endurance, and perseverance
of women. Much of her research involves matrilineal cultures found
in Asia, India, the Pacific Rim, Latin America, and Native Americans
in the United States.
Parker has exhibited her work in Brazil and throughout
the U.S. She teaches studio art and art history at College of DuPage
and Benedictine University in Illinois. She is also a recognized
curator, having supervised over 100 exhibitions of contemporary
and international art. Parker has upcoming showings of her work
in Chicago during the Around the Coyote Fall Arts Festival on September
8-10 and at DreamBox Foto Gallery on September 15-16.
Madonnas and Matriarchs will be on display at MECC
until October 13. The Slemp Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 8:30
p.m. on Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday,
