Awards Ceremony Held at MECC

Top scholars, contest winners, and student club and organization participants were recently honored at Mountain Empire Community College's annual awards ceremony held in the Goodloe Center on campus.  A number of faculty, staff, and guests presented honors to these distinguished students at the event, which took place on May 4. 

The following individuals were recognized at the ceremony:

All-USA Academic Team members were Olga Hayes and Elaine Murphy.

Americorps Service Awards went to Mary Absher, Brittany Austin, Natasha Bambarger, Christina Blanken, Lori Brickey, Josh Brooks, Matthew Bush, Diane Collins, Jessica S. Daniels, Heather Davis, Nicole Duncan, Becky Egan, Meagen Gilliam, M.O. Haskins, Jason Hendricks, Ashley Hood, April Hubbard, Heather Jennings, Jamie Jerrell, Matthew Large, Loven Livesay, Tamera Miles, Danielle Mullins, Ruth Mullins, Stacie Mullins, Peggy Price, Matthew Quinn, Geneva Reeves, John Steffie, Brandon Sturgill, Britney Thacker, Danielle Ward, and April Wilson.

Baptist Student Union Service Awards were given to Tisha Dorton and Johnny Long.

Club 10 members recognized at the ceremony included Robert McLaughlin and Matthew Salyer.

Diplomats from MECC recognized were April Bowen, Becky Egan, David Gray, Jason Ingles, Deneen Meade, Jenna Powers, and Virgil Younce.

Environmental Science Club members were Megan Calhoun, Greg Johnson, and Russell Vicars.

Exceptional Graduate Awards went to Ella M. Bishop, Megan Calhoun, Sonya D. Farmer, Olga Hayes, Gregory Johnson, and Russell Vicars.

Explorations Arts Competition Awards were presented to first and third place winner Kristen Fields and second place winner Audrey Mullins for color photography. 

In painting, Crystal Cox was the first place winner with Miranda Peters and Scott Silcox taking second and third respectively.  Paul Miller received an honorable mention in painting. 

For drawing, Candice Miller won first place, Angie Orndorf won second, and Crystal Cox placed third.  Honorable mentions were given to Leslie Mullins and Kristen Phillips in the drawing category.

Sharyn Martin won first place, Neva Hamilton won second place, and Amanda Clark won third place in the short story category. 

In the poetry category, Teresa Ward received both first and second place, while Neva Hamilton received a third place award. 

Jeanie Brehl won the first place award in the personal essay category, while Maria Davidson placed second, and Stephen Cooper placed third.

Hotshots Photography Club members were Mary Absher, Glenda Blansett, Angela Lawson, Ashley Litton, and Jessee Reeves.

The James L. Durham Mathematics Achievement Award was presented to Robert Wright.

The Janet Lester Mentoring Award was given to Tina Cupp.

Lambda Alpha Epsilon/Technology Club members recognized included Chris Austin, David Baldwin, Jacob Baldwin, Katherine Baldwin, Samuel Flanary, Richard Hunnicutt, Selina Jessee, Dustin Lane, Shawana Layne, Dylan Lewis, John McFarland, Ashley Mann, Carrie Mongle, Jessica Reynolds, Chris Stamper, Matthew Wes Tate, and Elizabeth Weatherly.

Mountain Empire Group Artist (MEGA) members were Roy Davis, Hannah Garrett, Brandon Hamilton, Frances Mullins, Candace Miller, Shaun Mullins, and Brittnie Phillips.

MECC Hearts of Faith club recognized member Johnny Long.

Outstanding Business Student Awards were presented to Cindy Harrison and Tammy Shepherd in Accounting, Bianca Nichole Bush in Administrative Support Technology (AST), Shanna Marie Begley in AST Medical Office Specialist, Shara Knox in Business Management, Margaret Tribble in Computer Software Specialist, and Melissa Renee Salyers in Legal Assisting.

The Peggy Durham Leadership Award was given to Jason Matthew Ingles.

Phi Beta Lambda Awards were presented to Courtney Adkins, Mary Absher, Elisha Alexander, Bianca Bush, Ed Redman, Renee Salyers, Amber Shupe, and Megan Sturgill.

Phi Theta Kappa Awards went to David Christian, David Gray, Olga Hayes, Jason Ingles, Greg Johnson, Tammy Lane, Elaine Murphy, and Doris Trierweiler.

Scott County Horizons 2006 Leadership Completion students were Anndora Robinette and Vivian Rogers.

Special Services Awards went to Bianca Bush, Jason Ingles, Elaine Murphy, and Dawn Wells.

Student Government Association members recognized included Mary Absher, Diane Collins, Jennifer Dockery, David Gray, Olga Hayes, Heather Huff, Peggy Johnson, Matthew Large, Jenna Powers, Kashmir Shaffer, Dawnyell Wells, Johnny Woliver, and Virgil Younce.

Student Services Awards were presented to Donna Stanley and Jim Collie.

University of Virginia's College at Wise Transfer Scholarships were awarded to Joseph Blessing, Joshua Evans, Olga Hayes, Heather Huff, Ashley Jenkins, Christopher Matthew Large, Tara Large, Elaine Murphy, Brittany Starnes, Justin Wilson, and Virgil Younce.

The VSCPA Award of Achievement went to Cindy Harrison.

The Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship was awarded to Priscilla Janette Hall.
