Contact: Melissa Potter March 31, 2006 Philanthropy Award Presented to Local Leader Isaac
Chancellor Glenn DuBois of the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) presented the first-ever round of the "Chancellor's Awards for Leadership in Philanthropy" to 23 outstanding community college benefactors – one honoree from each of the system's 23 colleges. DuBois plans for the award ceremony to become an annual event.
Robert "Bob" Edward Isaac is the first recipient from Mountain Empire Community College to receive the newly-formed award. He also had named in his honor the "Robert Edward Isaac Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship" at MECC.
Isaac is a graduate of Virginia Tech, a lifelong resident of Norton, and a retired businessman who owned and operated Dave's clothing store. He is currently the Chair of the MECC Foundation Board of Directors, a position in which he served from 1991 to 1993 and again in 1996 until the present. He was elected to the board in 1982 and has served continuously since that time.
"Bob Isaac has set an excellent example through his giving of time, talent, treasure, and enthusiasm to the MECC Foundation," stated Donna Stanley, MECC Vice-President for Institutional Advancement. "He and his wife, Dorothy, established and contribute to two scholarships. Whatever he does for the MECC Foundation, he does joyfully."
DuBois made the inaugural presentations of the Leadership in Philanthropy awards at the 3rd Annual Foundation Leadership Conference of the VCCS on March 31. The ceremony took place at the Boar's Head Inn in Charlottesville. Attending the conference were community college presidents, senior administrators, and college advancement staff members from across the state. The centerpiece of the day-long conference was a special recognition luncheon for award recipients.
Representing MECC at the event were staff members Stanley and Nikki Morrison, as well as Foundation Board members Isaac, Ben Allen, Gary McCann, Sue Rosenbalm, and Jim Shelton.
The Chancellor's Award for Leadership in Philanthropy is a new program designed to recognize the vital role of community college benefactors. To make a difference in the lives of students, community colleges rely on the support of outstanding board members, volunteers, and benefactors. Above all, these individuals demonstrate a passion for the mission of community colleges—to ensure that deserving people receive the advantage of a college education.
DuBois said it is a "privilege to be able to recognize these 23 individuals. Through their acts of generosity, they inspire others to follow the example they set."
