Two Criminal Justice students at the Wise County Career-Technical Center (WCCTC) recently received scholarships from Mountain Empire Community College. Michael Cross and Josh Darter placed first and second respectively in the District Criminal Justice SkillsUSA Championships held in Lee County, and were each awarded academic scholarships of $1,000 to attend MECC in the fall and pursue degrees in Criminal Justice.
At the SkillsUSA Championships, students were required to perform a traffic stop while being judged by local law enforcement officers from Southwest Virginia. Cross and Darter, who are instructed by Glenn Adkins at WCCTC, competed with students from other localities in Dickenson, Buchanan, Russell and Lee Counties.
Robert England, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at MECC, and Perry Carroll, MECC Director of Enrollment Services, awarded Cross and Darter with the scholarship funds. "It will be a pleasure to have these fine young men as an addition to our program," states England. Speaking of the partnership between MECC and WCCTC, Adkins says, "We are grateful to have a positive working relationship between our respective programs."
Criminal Justice students graduating from MECC with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Police Science or Corrections can find employment with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies; adult and juvenile correctional facilities; private security firms; and related places of employment. Individuals may begin their training in the one-year Administration of Justice Certificate Program. This certificate offers options in both law enforcement and corrections.
