MECC Welding Instructor Obtains CWI Licensure
Cecil Hubbard, Adjunct Welding Instructor at Mountain Empire Community College, has joined the ranks of a very exclusive organization. He just recently became a certified welding inspector (CWI), a feat which involved an extremely intensive, two-week licensure process. After four months of preparation, Hubbard enrolled in this certification process, issued by REAL Educational Services, Inc. in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
His journey in obtaining CWI licensure included both study and examination procedures with 10 classroom hours each day, as well as four hours of study time every evening. "It was tough, the material was very hard, and we had several in our group who didn't make the grade," he says. "I'm just glad I was able to hang in there. I appreciate Dr. Phillips (Dean of Health Science and Industrial Technology) at MECC and the folks at the Wise Skills Center for supporting me in this effort."
Hubbard was required to meet strict qualifications to even be accepted into the certification program. Applicants must be members in good standing of the American Welding Society, supply notarized documented work experience, and include a visual acuity record from a licensed ophthalmologist. According to a representative at REAL, there are an estimated 30,000 CWIs worldwide.
