MECC Foundation Announces Establishment of New Scholarship
The Mountain Empire Community College Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the William T. and Ruth Ann J. Clements Memorial Scholarship. The Clements were leading citizens in Wise County and the City of Norton.
Bill was President of Wise County National Bank and served as President of the Virginia Banker's Association. He served on the Board of Directors of St. Mary's Hospital, the Board of the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, and the State Water Control Board. In 1976, he was named as Citizen of the Year by the Wise County Chamber of Commerce.
The Clements were highly committed to K-12 and higher education. Bill attended the College of William and Mary and graduated from the University of Wisconsin's Graduate School of Banking. Over the years, he served on the Advisory Boards of Virginia Highlands and Mountain Empire Community Colleges, and was on the founding board of the MECC Foundation. Ruth Ann received a bachelor's degree in economics from the College of William and Mary. She served on the Norton City School Board for ten years.
The endowed scholarship is a lasting memorial to the Clements' and their many civic contributions to Wise County and the City of Norton. The William T. and Ruth Ann J. Clements Memorial Scholarship will benefit students who have financial need and will provide approximately $1,000 in scholarship assistance annually.
For more information about the scholarship, or to make a gift to this endowment, please contact the MECC Foundation, 3441 Mountain Empire Road, Big Stone Gap, Virginia 24219; telephone (276) 523-2400, extension 466.
