Community Theatre Announces Auditions for Spring Production at MECC

The recently-formed Mountain Empire Community Theatre is already making big plans for 2006.  The group, who staged their first production in the fall, now announces upcoming auditions for a spring performance of You Can't Take It with You.  Auditions will be held on Tuesday, January 17, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Goodloe Center on the Mountain Empire Community College campus.

The Community Theatre is tentatively scheduled to perform You Can't Take It with You in late March or early April.  The family-friendly play is a 1930s three-act comedy about a hilariously unconventional family and their unusually eclectic friends.  It won the Pulitzer Prize, and was written by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, who also collaborated on the play Animal Crackers, which was later made into a movie starring the Marx Brothers.

Creating a theater in which members of the community could take part was the idea of Joel Bailey, who teaches Developmental and Speech at MECC.  Bailey says that the Community Theatre is open to anyone, with or without theater experience.  "Anyone who wants to participate will not be turned away," he states.

Interested individuals may audition for parts, as well as help in other areas such as directing, set construction, lighting and sound, and ticket sales.  For more information about the Community Theatre or the upcoming auditions, contact Bailey at (276) 523-2400, extension 221 or jbailey@me.vccs.edu.
