Currently on display in the Slemp Gallery is an exhibition of
paintings by Rosemary Uccello Adams, Associate Professor at Northeast
State Technical Community College in Blountville, Tennessee.
The Slemp Gallery is located in the Wampler Library in Robb Hall
on the Mountain Empire Community College campus.
Ms. Adams received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University
of Wisconsin, Madison, in Painting and Printmaking and her Master
of Fine Arts degree from East Tennessee State University. Additional
studies have been at Indiana University, State University of
New York, St. Rose College, Albany, NY.
Eleven galleries have represented her work from California to
New York. She has had twelve solo exhibitions, nine invitational
exhibitions, sixteen group exhibitions, and numerous juried exhibitions.
She was awarded best in show at the Kingsport Annual Exhibition,
and a merit award at the First Tennessee Art Exhibition.
The exhibition, Orgy of Color – Journey to My Roots, consists
of acrylic paintings based on views she has seen while traveling
in Italy and Greece. When asked about her work she stated, "The
focus of my paintings is a personal journey of events and places
that I have visited that are dear to me. The paintings are often
a personal painting journal of my feelings about these events
and places. Rather than have the viewers become preoccupied with
my story, I prefer the viewers use their own imagination in allowing
the art works to stimulate something within leading them to respond
to the art work with their own memories or feelings."
Light is very important to her work. She quoted Arthur Dove
as saying, "We cannot express the light in nature because
we have not the sun, we can only express the light we have in
ourselves." Ms. Adams wants others to continue to see the
light in themselves and in her through her art work.
This exhibition will be on display in the Slemp
Gallery through
March 28, 2003. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday 8:00
a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The hours on Friday are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
