MECC Displays Annual High School Exhibition

Currently on display in the Slemp Gallery is the Annual High School Exhibition. The Slemp Gallery is located in the Wampler Library in Robb Hall on the Mountain Empire Community College Campus.

Each year the area high schools are encouraged to submit artwork from their students. This year students from Appalachia, Powell Valley, J.I. Burton, J.J. Kelly, Gate City, Twin Springs, Lee, and Thomas Walker high schools have submitted work for exhibition.

Powell Valley High School's art teacher, Mrs. Linda Hunsaker submitted drawings from Courtney Riggs, Sarene Jones, and Michael Cress. The examples of stain glass are from Heather Compton and Crystal Raum. She is also teaching art classes to Appalachia and J.J. Kelly via a fiber optics classroom. She submitted drawings from the following Appalachia High School students: Heather Sturgill, Courtney Honeycutt, Jessica Person, and Charity Golloway. Anthony Jackson and Michael Martin have tempera paintings in the exhibit and Bobby Fannon has a mask in the exhibit. From J.J. Kelly there are mixed media pieces from Zach Lawson, Elijah Stair, Tristan Meade, Josh Lawson and Jennifer Fultz. In addition, there is a pencil drawing by Bethany Hall and tempera painting by Eric Vanover.

Neil Walker is teaching art at J.I. Burton High School. This year he submitted drawings and paintings Michael Durham, Sabrina Poff, Candice Adams, Jon David Reed, Tiffany Farragher, Sarah Smith, Carlos Fuller, and Ryan Roberson

Mary Beth Culbertson is teaching art at Twin Springs High School. She submitted paintings from Whitney Nash, Alicia Gilreath, and Matthew Dockery. Alicia Gilreath, and Todd Cozart, have drawings on display.

Gate City's art teacher, David Jones submitted a slab built ceramic piece by Jared Seth Edwards, a watercolor by Sarah Calhoun, pencil drawings by Morgan Osborne, Fred Larkins, and Joey Blessing. A 10-minute video written and directed by Thomas Bledsoe will also be available for viewing.

Angelia Giles is the art teacher at Thomas Walker. Ink drawings by James Taylor and Shannon C. Laws are included in the exhibit along with a painting by Alisha Ayers and drawings by Jessica Foust and Martha Combs.

Lee High School's art teachers are Barbara Davidson and Lila Porterfield. They submitted collages from Jessica Ketron and Josh Johnson, a painting by Carrie Myers and a pencil and pen drawing by Krista Hayes. Amanda Bellamy and Amy Bledsoe created drawings using color-coated wire. Erica Sexton, Nazrin Roberson and Adam Robbins created wire sculptures. Adam Robbins also created a theater book.

The community is invited to visit the Slemp Gallery and view the fine work their students have done.

The exhibition continues through February 14, 2003. The gallery is open Monday through Thursday, 8:00 am to 7:00 p.m. The hours on Friday are 8:00 am to 4:30 p.m. In addition you may view some of the student work on the MECC Home Page.
