MECC graduates to give keynote address at commencement on May 15

Crossing the stage at graduation brings a feeling of success and perhaps a sigh of relief that this threshold has been reached. But for three of the graduates at this year’s commencement at Mountain Empire Community College, the stage will provide an opportunity to address their classmates, families, friends and faculty.

MECC is giving the honor of delivering the keynote address to three of its graduates, who will represent the three academic divisions at the college.

Mary E. Chandler of East Stone Gap is graduating with an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree in General Studies and plans to transfer to the University of Virginia¹s College at Wise to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She is a team leader of MECC’s Americorps program and volunteers with the 21st Century after school program at Appalachia Elementary.

Anna Maness of Dryden is graduating with an Associate of Applied Sciences degree in Administrative Support Technology, Medical Office Specialist, and plans to begin a career in the medical office environment. She served as president of the MECC chapter of Phi Beta Lambda, the national organization for students entering the business field.

Leslie Dawn Robinette of Coeburn is graduating with an Associate of Applied Sciences degree in Nursing. She plans to sit for the Virginia Nursing Boards (NCLEX-RN) in June and pursue a Bachelor¹s degree in Nursing. She was the 2008 class representative for the Rho Nu Nursing Club at MECC.

Over 300 graduates of Mountain Empire Community College will be recognized at the annual commencement ceremony on May 15th at 6:00 pm to receive degrees and certificates. The event will be held on the MECC campus.
