Free services for veterans in Southwest Virginia

Local veterans interested in attending a college or university now can receive assistance from Veterans Upward Bound.

Funded by the U. S. Department of Education under the banner of TRIO Programs, the Veterans Upward Bound Program began offering services to eligible veterans in Southwest Virginia in January of this year and is the only program in the Commonwealth of Virginia and one of 45 in the United States.

The program assists regional veterans in finding a college that is suited to each veteran's educational needs and career goals, as well as developing the knowledge and skills to successfully complete a higher education.

Services provided through the program include free college preparation courses, assistance with college or university selection, campus visitations, assistance with college applications and financial aid forms, academic success workshops, job-readiness seminars, and group counseling for veterans who have recently returned from deployment overseas.

Services are offered at Mountain Empire Community College, Southwest Virginia Community College, Virginia Highlands Community College, and Wytheville Community College.

An advisor will be at Mountain Empire Community College each Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Phillips-Taylor Hall, 139. For more information about this program, contact one of the following representatives: Gwendalyn Slone, Director; Denise Miller, Advisor; or Martha Strouth, Advisor at (276) 964-7593 or on Wednesdays at (276) 523-2400 ext. 208.
