Virginia
STAR Events (Students Taking Action
with Recognition)
This
program allows members to build skills in leadership and job-related
areas.
To
enter the national FCCLA STAR Events, Virginia members must
first compete at the state level. The rules and information
for STAR Events are found on the national FCCLA Web site (www.fcclainc.org).
In addition to the national rules, Virginia participants
must complete forms and review information specific to the
state events. The Virginia STAR Events Manual is available
by clicking on that red title text below. Participants
will need the information from both the national manual and
the state manual in order to compete.

STAR Events Updates -
Updates for 2010 are listed below.
National
FCCLA has revised the National STAR Events Manual (available as
a download on their Web site as a free resource for affiliated chapters
- www.fcclainc.org). This
manual will be used for the 2010 Virginia FCCLA events.
Click
here for a summary of major changes in the National STAR Events
Manual.
The official
FCCLA STAR Events binder is required for all entries in Applied
Technology, Career Investigation, Early Childhood, Entrepreneurship,
Environmental Ambassador, Fashion Design, Hospitality, Job Interview,
Life Event Planning, Promote and Publicize FCCLA, and Teach and
Train (if submitting a hard copy portfolio). The binder is available
for purchase from API and comes in either red or white, with “FCCLA”
on the spine and with a clear front-sleeve pocket. This binder
is not required for the Career Portfolio & Exhibit Events
(Culinary Arts Exhibit and Early Childhood Education Exhibit).
The
Board of Directors passed an Electronic Device Policy at their October,
2006 meeting that affects STAR Events participants. This policy
states, “Communication devices (including but not limited to cell
phones, PDAs, iPods, and laptops) are prohibited in any activity
in which an unfair advantage could result. Examples are the knowledge
assessment for state officer candidates and STAR Events setup and
competitions (unless specifically required for the event). The possession
of these items will result in disqualification.” The use of such
electronic devices is still allowed in certain live event presentations
. Students are advised to not bring these communication devices
into their event rooms, but should leave them with their adviser
or a trusted friend while involved in the STAR Event. Room consultants
may hold the devices for participants, if necessary.
The
Board of Directors also expanded on the dress code regarding blue
jeans. The language now prohibits blue denim in all conference
sessions, including the Sunday morning STAR Events Recognition Session.
This means blue denim in any article of clothing (pants,
skirts, jackets, dresses, etc.) is not allowed. Students
may choose to wear blue denim as part of a costume for a
STAR Events presentation, however, it should be noted that evaluators
often think this is not appropriate and score the presentation lower.
The
Board of Directors approved assessing a late fee to chapters if
entries are submitted incomplete and the needed information is not
provided in a timely manner. To avoid this, advisers should follow
the “Checklist for Advisers” on page 19 in the introduction section
of the state manual.
Check
both the state and the national STAR Events Manuals for more information.
