Honorable
mention Poetry, Billie Jean Scott
ONE
GIANT STEP
I caught the comic pages
The Esso driver tossed out to me
While walking on my way to school.
I traveled to the moon with Flash Gordon;
And I also learned to read.
It’s a waste of time, some said,
To read that imaginary trash;
But I was happily launched in outer space,
Traveling fast, with Dale and Flash.
I stood on a Florida coastline
With newspapers in
my hand,
Waving, as Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins,
Blasted off for a new frontier-land
To take the first step for all mankind,
Which I had taken in thirty-nine
While walking on my way to school.
