Counseling
As a service to students, MECC maintains professional counselors in addition to a system of faculty advisors. The Counseling Center is located in the Sutherland Student Services Suite in
Holton Hall.
Confidentiality
All counseling services in the office of Student Services are confidential. We operate under the guidelines of professional counselors prescribed by The Virginia Board of Counseling. This means that whatever you share with us will not be shared with anyone, including professors, staff, students, parents or other persons inside or outside of the office of Student Services unless the student gives the counselor written permission for the counselor to release information. So no matter who seeks information about students, the answer is always something like this: "We are not allowed to disclose any information about students without a written release of information from that student. Exceptions to this are made in cases of emergency including:
-Safety; i.e. a student discloses to a counselor intent to do serious harm to self or others;
-Reported child/dependent abuse;
-Court order.
