Home School Students

Currently Enrolled in Home School Education

MECC will consider the admission of students to credit classes who are at least 14 years old, who are not attending a public or private school, and are currently enrolled as 'home school students.' Individuals below the age of 14 may apply to the college for special consideration for admittance which requires an interview with the parent and the student. Enrollment may be considered as enrichment to the home school program, but is not intended to substitute for the home school experience. The following policies will apply to the enrollment of home school students:

1. Prior to admission, an applicant who does not have a high school diploma and is not at least 18 years old will be required to demonstrate appropriate basic skills compatible with the College academic expectations.

2. All students of Mountain Empire Community College, regardless of age, are subject to all of the rules, policies, and procedures of the College pertaining to attendance, confidentiality of records, conduct, etc., as found in the College Catalog and Student Handbook.

3. Students who are home schooled must provide a current copy of a signed home school agreement between the appropriate school system and the authorizing parent or guardian. Such documentation must be provided to the Director of Student Services prior to admission to the College.

4. Financial aid is not available to students who are simultaneously enrolled in home school instruction.

Home School Graduate

The College welcomes home school graduates in all academic programs.

Information for Parents of Home Schooled Students Admitted Under Special Consideration Provision

Parent requests for information about attendance and academic progress

Under the Family Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) the college does not disclose any personally identifiable information contained in the student’s education records to any third party without the student’s written consent. This includes disclosure of information to the parent regardless of the student’s age. Parents would only be able to obtain information about attendance or academic progress if the student submits written permission.

Student grade report at the end of the semester

Shortly after the exam period each semester the final grade for the course is posted to the College’s Student Information System – MECC Online. To view or print a copy of the grades the student will need to login to MECC Online using their user id and password. Paper grade reports are not mailed to the home address.

Requesting a grade transcript be sent to the high school or another college

To request that an official grade transcript be mailed to your high school or another college, the student may login to MECC Online and request the transcript or submit the request in writing to the Registrar’s Office in Godwin Hall. The request should include the name and address of the specific office where the transcript should be mailed as well as the student’s name and either social security number or student user id. Other colleges require an official transcript be mailed to them before transferring any MECC credit. Written requests must be signed by the student. Transcripts are generally mailed within three days after the request is received.

Adult behavior

Parents and students should be aware that the College does not alter course content to accommodate students who are not legally adults. Students may be exposed to adult behavior and adult content/themes in and out of the classroom.
