FACT: That is a common assumption; however, you are never too old to return to school. In fact, 52% of the students at MECC are 25 and older with the average age being around 30 years-old.

…I CAN’T AFFORD IT.

FACT: There are many types of financial aid available to students who qualify. Over 80% of students at MECC receive some type of financial assistance. More information.

…I HAVE FAMILY RESPONSIBILITIES.

FACT: The truth is most students have family responsibilities however; you can set a good example for your family by attending college. Family members can cooperate by sharing responsibilities. Time management is essential when balancing multiple roles such as work, family, and school.

…I HAVE A JOB.

FACT: Many students attending college at MECC do work. In fact, 25% of MECC students work 21-39 hour/week while attending school. Classes are offered during days. Evenings and weekends as well as distance education formats such as Web and video.

…I DON’T HAVE ANY COMPUTER SKILLS.

FACT: You will when you take a beginner course in basic computers. Many adult students returning to the classroom feel anxious about technology. These fears quickly diminish with a beginner computer course and becoming more familiar with computers by using them in labs and in the Library.

…I DIDN’T DO WELL/DID NOT LIKE SCHOOL IN THE PAST.

FACT: Give yourself another chance! MECC offers classes, counseling and tutoring to help students in subject areas that need to be strengthened. At a different time your life, school may have seemed like something imposed upon you but as an adult the experience can be very different. You now have different goals, life experiences, and purposes. These can all work to your advantage.

FACT: Most adults returning to college have children and many of whom are still at home or just entering school.

…I’M AFRAID I WON’T FIT IN WITH THE OTHER STUDENTS.

FACT: The fact is we all feel that way at first but you will fit in. You will soon realize that everybody is here for a purpose---to get an education.

…I DON’T WANT TO GO THROUGH ALL THE RED TAPE.
