Academic Advising
How MECC defines Academic Advising
The primary role of the academic advisor is to promote student success. The academic advisor should work closely with advisees to assure that they are enrolled in the proper courses in their programs and that they are provided with every opportunity to succeed in those courses and programs. Students should take responsibility for their career goals; however, advisors should assist students with their career paths and the curricula needed to pursue their career. While advisors are not personal counselors trained to help students with personal issues, they should refer students to appropriate personnel or resources if it is deemed helpful for student success.
MECC’s Expectations of Best Practices for Academic Advising
- Advisors post office hours for advisement or hold “open office hours.”
- Advisors strive to work with students to set up advising appointments.
- Students meet with advisors on multiple occasions to discuss curriculum/course issues.
- Advisors help students clarify and develop realistic, educational career plans.
- Advisors monitor advisees’ progress toward educational career goals.
- Advisors maintain an advising record.
- New advisors are provided training and current advisors are kept up-to-date on advising procedures.
- An up-to-date advising website is provided to advisors.
- Students are provided information via the web, which includes advisor’s email, telephone number, and office hours; access to advising forms and procedures; and information concerning their program/plan.
- There is an extensive freshmen orientation program, which includes college success skills, overview of the college’s academic programs, introduction to the advising system, and opportunities for students to interact with peers, faculty, and advisors.
