Classroom Policies

Honor Code: The Honor System at Old Dominion University is based upon the integrity of the individual. This system assumes that the student will accept his or her role in the University community with a feeling of self-respect and duty. Cheating, lying, and plagiarism will constitute violation of the Honor System. ODU takes violations of the honor code very seriously. Honor Code violations have the potential to severely damage your association with the University, as well as your ability to attend other institutions.

Classroom etiquette: Simply follow this rule of thumb: do not conduct yourself differently in a satellite delivered class than you would if the instructor was standing right in front of you. In other words, would you carry on a conversation with your neighbor? Would you read the newspaper? Would you noisily eat potato chips? Would you make wise cracks at the professor's comments? Of course not! Therefore do not do it in a TELETECHNET class either! Students are reminded that engaging in such behavior is a violation of the Honor Code (not to mention just plain rude). Please do not jeopardize your academic career by behaving rudely.

Videotape checkout policy: Videotapes of classes may be checked out from the ODU office for a 48-hour time limit. If class enrollment is small, you may be able to call and extend your checkout period for an additional 48-hours.

Cover Sheets: Cover sheets must be filled out completely each time you turn in any assignment or exam. When completing your cover sheets do not take shortcuts such as writing only your last name or abbreviating the name of the course. Also, you should put your name and social security number in the top right corner of every page, in case the pages become separated. We also recommend you keep a copy of all assignments submitted to our office. Remember, you are but one of hundreds and hundreds of students who turn in assignments everyday at TELETECHNET sites. These assignments are all processed through a central point in the Office of Distance Learning at ODU. The potential for your assignment getting lost or misrouted will be greatly minimized by your completing the cover sheet accurately and completely each time.

Children in the Classroom: It is a University wide policy (as well as a Mountain Empire Community College policy) that no children be allowed in the classroom when classes are in session. This policy will be enforced. Please take into consideration your fellow students and do not bring children to class.

Copy Machine: The XEROX machine must be used only for material related to your attendance at Old Dominion University, i.e., class material and/or administrative material. The number of copies should be limited to ten copies per page.

Receive Equipment: Please do not attempt to adjust any of the receive equipment (unless authorized by the site staff). If adjustments need to be made, inform the site staff on duty.

Exams and Quizzes: All students should make every effort to take exams and quizzes at the prescribed day and time. In the event that you cannot take an exam/quiz at the scheduled day and time, you must contact the professor of that particular class and request a makeup. Under no circumstances is the site staff authorized to administer a makeup without specific permission form the instructor. All makeup exams will be conducted on Saturdays, no exceptions.

Writing Sample Placement Test (WSPT)
The purpose of the WSPT is to evaluate the writing abilities of all incoming degree seeking students. The writing of students with credit for first-year composition (which should include most TELETECHNET students) is evaluated to determine any weaknesses that would affect performance on the Exit Examination of Writing Proficiency and performance in ODU course work.

The WSPT is a 90-minute essay test. A student is expected to write a 400-500 word expository essay responding to one of two "should", or "would", or "could" questions derived from three topic areas: Basic Human Rights, Television, and Education.

The WSPT will be administered several times during the semester. Dates and times will be posted in each classroom.

For more information regarding the WSPT consult Old Dominion University's Writing Center webpage.

Exit Exam of Writing Proficiency (EE)
All undergraduate students, including those students who are seeking a second baccalaureate degree, must sit for and pass the University's Exit Exam of Writing Proficiency prior to the date of graduation.

The Exit Exam is a three-hour writing test. Passing this test is a requirement for graduation from Old Dominion University. The writing requirement was implemented in 1978 to ensure that all graduates are prepared to write competently at a professional level.

Students are eligible to take the EE when they have taken and passed the WSPT and have completed 58 semester hours. Taking the exam early in your junior year is ideal so that students will have time to retake the exam if needed. Students should have satisfactorily completed or have credit for English 110C before sitting for the exam.

For more information regarding the Exit Exam consult Old Dominion University's Writing Center webpage.

Senior Assessment
All graduating seniors must complete the required senior assessment during their final semester in which they plan to graduate. Neither the final transcript nor the diploma will be issued until the student has completed this assessment. Information regarding the assessment will be mailed to students after they apply for graduation. When seniors apply for graduation they are added to the assessment list enabling them to take their assessment on-line via the web. Click here for the Assessment Homepage and click the Distance Senior Assessment link to complete the senior assessment on-line. Please not that there are different versions of senior assessment for campus seniors and TELETECHNET seniors.
